Every October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month unites individuals, organizations, and communities to bolster defenses against evolving cyber threats. This period emphasizes proactive cybersecurity education for ourselves, our families, and colleagues, highlighting the importance of awareness and preparedness in our tech-reliant world.
Throughout the month, initiatives like workshops and webinars promote cybersecurity best practices, equipping individuals with the tools to combat phishing, ransomware, and identity theft. Participants learn to recognize suspicious activities, secure devices, and create strong passwords.
Cybersecurity Awareness Month also underscores the need for vigilance in a connected world. Staying informed about cyber threat trends and countermeasures is crucial, as adversaries continually adapt. A mindset of continuous learning is vital for digital safety.
Organizations play a key role by developing cybersecurity policies and training employees, fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes security. This reduces breach risks and enhances resilience.

During my recent talk at the Concho Valley Technical Alliance in San Angelo, I conveyed a message that is growing increasingly urgent: Artificial Intelligence isn't about to take your job or your car — it's targeting your trust.
When most people hear “Artificial Intelligence,” they imagine a shiny metal robot plotting world domination. But in reality, AI looks a lot less like a sci-fi villain and a lot more like a cloned voice calling your grandma for bail money. AI today doesn’t fire lasers — it sends text messages, fake emails, and spoofed phone calls. It mimics your boss, your bank, and even your loved ones — and it’s remarkably convincing.
Criminals are now leveraging the same AI tools we utilize for innovation, but they employ them for manipulation, imitation, and financial gain.
Recent instances involve AI-cloned voices used in virtual kidnapping schemes, deepfake executives deceiving companies into transferring millions, AI-created child abuse images that are currently facing federal prosecution, and AI-washed investment scams that defraud investors.
In 2024, Americans faced $16.6 billion in losses due to cybercrime, according to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Texas reported the second-highest losses, with $1.35 billion stolen, highlighting the state's vulnerability and the need for stronger cybersecurity measures.
Cyberattacks involve complex data exploitation, with attackers using data brokers to access personal information like email addresses and location data. This information allows precise targeting of individuals. Social media scraping is common, extracting user details to craft convincing phishing and social engineering attacks. Breached passwords are a major issue, leading to credential-stuffing attacks and account takeovers. SIM swapping and fake SMS APIs are also prevalent, allowing criminals to intercept communications and access sensitive accounts.
Cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to craft highly convincing messages and replicate voices with remarkable accuracy. This troubling trend makes it significantly challenging for individuals and organizations to distinguish between genuine communications and fraudulent ones. The sophistication of these tactics is alarming; with just a few seconds of audio from a podcast, video, or even a casual conversation, an attacker can create a realistic voice clone that sounds remarkably like the target individual. This cloned voice can then be used to manipulate unsuspecting colleagues or associates into approving unauthorized transactions, such as wire transfers, which can result in significant financial losses.
Given this level of technological advancement in cybercrime, it is imperative for both individuals and organizations to adopt proactive cybersecurity strategies that are robust and multifaceted. The evolving threat landscape necessitates a comprehensive approach to cybersecurity that encompasses not only technological solutions but also human factors. Organizations must invest in advanced cybersecurity tools that can detect and prevent such sophisticated attacks, including AI-driven anomaly detection systems that can identify unusual patterns in communication. Additionally, implementing strong authentication measures, such as multi-factor authentication, can add an extra layer of security to sensitive transactions.
Moreover, establishing a call-back policy is one of the most effective defenses against these types of attacks. This policy requires that any requests for sensitive actions, such as financial transactions, be verified through a separate communication channel. For instance, if an employee receives a request via email or phone to transfer funds, they should independently contact the requester using a known and trusted number to confirm the legitimacy of the request. This simple yet effective strategy can thwart many attempts at fraud.
In addition to technical measures, organizations should also encourage the use of passphrases during financial and family emergencies. Passphrases serve as a secure method of verifying identity that is much harder for cybercriminals to replicate, providing an additional safeguard against impersonation. Training staff to pause and verify requests before taking action is equally crucial. Employees should be educated about the signs of potential fraud and encouraged to adopt a mindset of skepticism, particularly when dealing with requests that involve financial transactions or sensitive information. Regular training sessions and simulations can help reinforce these practices, ensuring that staff are well-prepared to recognize and respond to potential threats.
AI is also being used to write text scams, known as smishing. You may receive messages like “Your package delivery failed” or “Apple Support: unusual login detected.” These are written by AI systems, tailored to your location, and made to sound legitimate. To protect yourself, never click on links in texts, forward scam messages to 7726 (SPAM), and use Mobile Threat Defense at work.
Email scams are evolving at an alarming rate, becoming increasingly sophisticated through the innovative application of artificial intelligence tools such as WormGPT. These advanced AI systems are capable of generating highly realistic phishing emails that can easily bypass traditional security filters, making it significantly more challenging for employees to identify malicious attempts. The emails are crafted to mimic legitimate communications, often using familiar logos, language, and even sender addresses that appear trustworthy. As a result, unsuspecting employees may inadvertently click on harmful links or provide sensitive information, leading to severe security breaches. To effectively defend against these sophisticated attacks, organizations must implement a multi-layered security strategy. This includes enforcing Sender Policy Framework (SPF), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), and Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC) policies. These protocols help verify the authenticity of email senders and prevent spoofing. Additionally, organizations should adopt FIDO2 hardware-based multifactor authentication (MFA), which provides an extra layer of security that is difficult for attackers to bypass. Regular phishing drills and training sessions can also help employees recognize and respond appropriately to potential phishing attempts, fostering a culture of security awareness.
Furthermore, businesses can bolster their defenses against phishing attacks by implementing phishing-resistant MFA solutions. This involves requiring additional verification methods that are less susceptible to interception or manipulation. For example, utilizing callback passphrases for financial approvals can add a layer of verification that ensures transactions are legitimate before processing. Additionally, enforcing strict DMARC reject policies can help prevent unauthorized senders from impersonating the organization, thereby reducing the likelihood of successful phishing attempts. Conducting quarterly security exercises allows businesses to test their response strategies and ensure that employees remain vigilant against evolving threats. These proactive measures can significantly enhance an organization’s overall security posture.
On an individual level, it is crucial to implement best practices to protect personal information. One highly effective method is using unique and complex passwords for each account. To protect oneself, it is important to maintain a skeptical mindset about online content. Look for signs of manipulation, such as lighting that doesn’t match the setting, unnatural blinking patterns inconsistent with typical human behavior, or voices that sound robotic or overly refined. By becoming aware of these indicators, individuals can better navigate digital information complexities and reduce the risk of being misled by deceptive content.

As cybercriminals continue to harness the power of AI and other advanced technologies to execute their schemes, it is essential for both individuals and organizations to stay vigilant and proactive. By implementing robust cybersecurity strategies, fostering a culture of verification, and prioritizing ongoing education and training, we can better protect ourselves against the ever-evolving threats posed by cybercrime.
Cybersecurity isn’t just about software — it’s about mindset. AI may be the newest sword in a scammer’s arsenal, but education and awareness remain our strongest shields. Together, we can protect our families, our workplaces, and our digital villages.
