⚔️ Part 1: Forged at Home — When Purpose Becomes the Project

Some of the most meaningful cyber projects do not begin with code.
They begin with a need.
This one did not start in a classroom, a lab, or a competition setting. It started at home, with my family. All of my sons have autism, and one of them has a deep and focused curiosity about two things: weather and time. Not in a casual way, but in the kind of way that turns simple questions into daily exploration. He does not just want to know what the weather is. He wants to understand it. He does not just ask what time it is. He wants to know how time connects across the world.
That curiosity becomes even more powerful during global events like the Olympics, when time zones suddenly matter in a very real way. Suddenly, knowing the time somewhere else is not just interesting. It is part of understanding what is happening in the moment.
He wanted answers.
Not “let me Google that real quick” answers.
Not “give me a second” answers.
He wanted right now, crystal-clear, no-nonsense, Viking-level answers.
The kind of answers that don’t buffer, don’t spin, and definitely don’t say, “Hmm… something went wrong.”
Fast. Clear. Done.
Then one day, my wife, known in our world as The Cookie Maiden, asked a question that changed everything:
“Is there something you can build so he can just run it and instantly see the weather and time, especially across time zones?”
It was a simple question.
But it carried real purpose.
That moment became the starting point for what I now call my Sunday Cyber Projects, because Sundays were often the only time I could slow down, focus, and build something that truly mattered.
This was never about creating something flashy or impressive. It was about creating something useful. Something accessible. Something that would make sense to him.
And like most meaningful builds, it was not smooth.
There were long afternoons. There were moments of frustration. There was plenty of trial and error, along with what I like to call a fair amount of mad Googling.
I also leaned on AI, not as a shortcut, but as a tool. It helped me explore ideas, test approaches, and keep moving when I hit roadblocks. Little by little, something started to take shape.
Not just a project....A solution.

But this project didn’t stop at home.
It quickly became something bigger—something I can bring into my CyberPatriot teams, summer camps, and classrooms. It’s a hands-on way to introduce students to Command Line interfaces, Batch scripting, PowerShell, troubleshooting, and critical thinking—all wrapped inside a project that actually solves a real problem.
And it reinforces one lesson I tell my team members all the time:
“AI can help you find answers—but it’s your job to test, validate, and make sure those answers are right.”
In this blog series, I’ll walk you through how this project came to life—from the original version built for my son to the fully upgraded Cyber Viking edition (because let’s be honest… everything is better with a little Viking flair).
And remember—there’s no single “right” way to build something like this.
If it works… and it brings excitement to the person using it… then you’ve already won. ⚔️🔥
In Part 2, the journey begins—where a simple idea is forged into a powerful command-line solution.
