From Thunderstorms to Cyber Awareness, AI, and Digital Defense

⚡🛡️ The first day of the CyberTexas Foundation CyberPatriot Standard Camp has officially concluded, and it was an exciting start to an incredible week of learning.
The day began with a literal storm as thunder and rain rolled through the area while campers arrived eager to explore the world of cybersecurity. Despite the weather, the energy and enthusiasm of our students were stronger than ever.
This year's camp brings together an outstanding group of young learners from across Texas. Among them are students who traveled from Dallas, members of a Marine Corps JROTC unit from Laredo, and several returning campers who are continuing to strengthen the cybersecurity skills they developed in previous years.
Cybersecurity Is a Mindset
One of the first lessons we discussed was that cybersecurity is not simply a skill—it is a mindset.
Throughout camp, students are encouraged to maintain constant cyber awareness. Hackers are not concerned with who you are; they are interested in the information you possess. Passwords, personal data, photos, and online accounts all have value, making everyone a potential target.
To reinforce this lesson, I announced that during camp I would be playing the role of the hacker.
If a device was left unattended, I might "capture" it. If an opportunity arose to test cyber awareness, I would take it.
Throughout the day, I conducted several real-world awareness exercises and successfully "compromised" four unattended phones.
The result?
📸 Plenty of photos—including several featuring the phone owners themselves!
While everyone enjoyed a good laugh, the lesson was memorable and effective:
🔒 Physical security is cybersecurity.
Exploring Artificial Intelligence and Responsible Use
The primary focus of Day 1 was Understanding Artificial Intelligence, Prompt Engineering, and Responsible AI Use.
Campers learned:
✅ What Artificial Intelligence is—and what it is not
✅ How AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot function
✅ Why AI systems sometimes generate inaccurate information, often called "hallucinations," and why verification is essential
✅ How to create effective prompts using the Cyber Viking Prompt Formula (Role, Task, Format, Constraints)
✅ How AI can serve as a learning assistant for cybersecurity, networking, Linux, Windows, Cisco technologies, and digital forensics
✅ How to recognize AI-related scams, deepfakes, misinformation, and unethical uses of technology
✅ How to use AI responsibly while protecting privacy and maintaining academic integrity
Students participated in hands-on exercises that challenged them to evaluate AI-generated content, improve prompts, choose appropriate AI tools for specific tasks, and even begin designing their own cyber heroes.
Most importantly, they learned that AI should be used to enhance learning and critical thinking—not replace it.
The Cyber Viking AI Rules
We concluded the day by introducing the Cyber Viking AI Rules:
🛡️ Verify Everything
🛡️ Think Critically
🛡️ Protect Your Data
🛡️ Use AI to Learn
🛡️ Respect Others
🛡️ Stay Curious
🛡️ Keep Learning
🛡️ Cyber Like A Viking!
These principles will guide students throughout the week as they continue exploring cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
Creating Cyber Heroes
For homework, campers received a creative challenge: design their own cyber hero.
Each student must create:
A hero name
A mission
Unique powers
A cyber threat they defeat
A backstory
A logo prompt
A character image
Tomorrow, they will present their creations to the class.
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching cybersecurity is watching creativity and technology come together. Today, students learned about AI, cybersecurity, prompt engineering, and responsible technology use. Tonight, they become creators, storytellers, and innovators.
I am excited to see the digital defenders they bring to life.

Setting Sail for Windows 11
Tomorrow, our cyber warriors will raise their shields and begin their journey into the world of Windows 11.
Students will learn how to:
Secure operating systems
Protect user accounts
Safeguard sensitive information
Identify vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them
They will gain hands-on experience with one of the world's most widely used operating systems while building foundational cyber defense skills that every security professional needs.
The hackers will not be taking the day off—and neither will we.
The voyage has begun, the longships are underway, and our future cyber defenders are preparing for the challenges ahead.
⚔️ Windows 11. Cyber Defense. Hands-On Learning. ⚔️
Tomorrow, we won't just use technology—
🛡️ We will learn how to defend it.
Looking Ahead
A heartfelt thank you goes out to our campers, parents, instructors, interns, St. Mary's University, and the entire CyberTexas Foundation team for making Day 1 such a tremendous success.

The future belongs to builders, defenders, innovators, and lifelong learners. After spending the day with this remarkable group of students, I am more optimistic than ever about the future of cybersecurity.
⚔️ CYBER LIKE A VIKING! ⚔️

Great work Viking! 🦈
