Operation VIKINGS: The Cyber Viking Escape Room

Every year, the final day of our CyberTexas Foundation CyberPatriot Advanced Camp ends with a CyberPatriot-style competition. The students put everything they've learned throughout the week to the test by hardening systems, solving problems, and competing against one another.

This year...

I decided to change the rules.

Instead of sitting behind a computer for one final CyberPatriot image, the students were about to experience something completely different.

⚔️ Operation VIKINGS ⚔️

🛡️ The Mission Begins

As the campers entered the classroom Friday morning, they quickly realized this wasn't going to be an ordinary competition.

Instead of a Windows image waiting on their laptops, they were greeted with a mission briefing.

The legendary Cyber Crystal had been stolen from Val-HALL-ah, and only the Cyber Viking Crew could recover it. To succeed, each team would need to solve a series of increasingly challenging cyber puzzles, recover seven hidden FLAG words, and use those clues to unlock the final password that would save Val-HALL-ah.

The objective sounded simple.

Complete eight challenges.

Recover every flag.

Unlock the final password.

Do it faster than everyone else.

But there was one catch...

Success wouldn't come from memorizing commands.

It would come from paying attention to details, researching carefully, verifying information, and working together as a team.

⚔️ Eight Challenges. One Goal.

The Escape Room consisted of eight unique challenges; each designed around skills our campers had been building throughout the week.

Rather than focusing on one operating system, the challenges encouraged students to combine multiple disciplines while using every tool available to them—including Windows, web browsers, artificial intelligence, search engines, and, most importantly, teamwork.

Their mission took them through:

🪓 Digital Archaeology — discovering hidden clues stored inside file metadata.

🔐 Ancient Viking Cipher — identifying and decoding encoded messages while understanding the difference between encoding and encryption.

📜 The Forgotten Log — investigating Windows Event Logs to determine what really happened during a suspicious login attempt.

🕸️ Fake Website Investigation — spotting phishing attempts by carefully examining URLs, domains, and other subtle clues.

🌐 Trace the Packet — researching public DNS servers and understanding how networking keeps the Internet connected.

🕵️ OSINT Mission — using artificial intelligence alongside trusted public sources to identify clues while verifying every answer.

⚔️ Harald's Verification Challenge — finding hidden flags and proving that every AI-generated answer was backed by trustworthy evidence.

🏆 The Final Puzzle — combining every FLAG word collected throughout the mission to unlock the final password and restore the Cyber Crystal.

While every challenge tested technical knowledge, they all reinforced one lesson:

Never trust your first answer. Verify it.

🤝 Teamwork Wins Battles

One of my favorite parts of the competition wasn't watching students solve puzzles.

It was watching them solve them together.

Every team naturally began dividing responsibilities.

One student researched.

Another verified.

Someone decoded messages.

Another examined Windows artifacts.

Someone else double-checked every answer before the team moved on.

Without being told, they were beginning to think like a professional incident response team.

Communication became just as important as technical knowledge.

And that's exactly what I hoped would happen.

♠️ Preparing for Battle

Since only one team could compete in the Escape Room at a time, the remaining teams didn't simply sit and wait.

Instead, they prepared.

The upcoming challenge topics remained displayed on the overhead screen, giving students an opportunity to research unfamiliar subjects, discuss possible approaches, and think through strategies before entering the Escape Room.

Meanwhile, members of the #CyTX crew kept everyone engaged by playing card games with the campers, creating plenty of laughs while building friendships between rounds.

It made the waiting feel less like waiting...

...and more like preparing for the next mission.

🗺️ The Adventure Continues Across Campus

Escaping the room wasn't the end.

It was only the beginning.

As each team completed Operation VIKINGS, they immediately headed outside for another challenge.

Over the past four years, our #CyTX team, especially Jasiah and Derek, have transformed what originally started as a simple scavenger hunt with cyber questions into a fully interactive, web-based campus experience.

Students traveled across the beautiful St. Mary's University campus solving location-based challenges, following digital clues, and continuing the adventure long after they escaped Val-HALL-ah.

Watching the evolution of this activity over the past four years has been incredible, and I couldn't be more proud of the creativity and hard work Jasiah and Derek have invested in making it such an engaging experience for our campers.

A competition like this simply isn't possible without an amazing team of volunteers.

I want to extend a huge thank you to our outstanding CrowdStrike volunteers who spent Friday helping us run the Escape Room.

Your willingness to monitor each challenge, answer questions, provide guidance when teams became stuck, and help move campers from one station to the next made the entire event run smoothly.

With multiple rooms, multiple teams, and eight different challenges running throughout the day, your support was invaluable.

Without your help, managing the competition would have been significantly more difficult.

Thank you for investing your time, expertise, and enthusiasm in our campers. You played a tremendous role in making this year's competition a success.

🏆 And the Winners Are...

Every team brought enthusiasm.

Every team learned something new.

Every team demonstrated perseverance.

But one team managed to complete all eight challenges faster than everyone else.

Team 5 successfully completed the entire Cyber Viking Escape Room in an incredible 29 minutes, earning the title of Operation VIKINGS Champions!

Outstanding work!

⚔️ More Than a Competition

At the end of the day, this competition wasn't what most of the students expected.

Instead of sitting quietly in front of a CyberPatriot image, they found themselves solving mysteries, decoding clues, researching unfamiliar topics, verifying AI responses, investigating Windows artifacts, identifying phishing websites, collaborating with teammates, and racing against the clock.

They laughed.

They celebrated.

They occasionally became frustrated.

Then they solved the problem and moved on to the next challenge.

More importantly, they learned new research techniques, improved their ability to verify information, strengthened their attention to detail, and discovered that solving cybersecurity problems is rarely a solo activity.

These are skills that will serve them well when they encounter challenges in their classrooms, on their CyberPatriot teams, and as they prepare for CyberPatriot XVIII and beyond.

The Escape Room may not have been the competition they expected...

…but judging by the excitement, teamwork, and smiles throughout the day, it was a competition they'll remember for a long time.

New friendships.

Hands-on labs.

Guest speakers.

Threat hunting.

Networking.

Windows.

Linux.

Space.

Artificial Intelligence.

And one unforgettable Cyber Viking Escape Room.

Watching these students grow throughout the week has been one of the most rewarding experiences of the summer. Their curiosity, determination, and willingness to learn remind me why programs like the CyberTexas Foundation CyberPatriot Advanced Camp are so important.

To our campers: keep asking questions, keep practicing, keep exploring, and never stop learning.

To our volunteers, guest speakers, mentors, and supporters: thank you for helping inspire the next generation of cyber defenders.
